Low-Cost Grey Water Irrigation A reader explains how waste water collected from your kitchen sink can become the feed source for a grey water irrigation system in your vegetable garden. By Dana Cohen A simple, portable grey water irrigation system for a small garden. I started by looking into rain barrels as a way to cache water and was amazed at how expensive they were. Then I found a few 5-gallon buckets at a construction site, and came up with this simple grey water irrigation setup that has worked well for me for the past two summers.
We put a small stainless steel bar sink in it and hubby hooked out sink up to a garden hose so we could wash our hands and our veggies. We didn’t want to hook it up to our hot and cold supply lines knowing in the winter months those lines would freeze and burst since our outdoor kitchen .
Everything In This Slideshow 1 of 25 There’s no doubt about it — a well-organized tool shed can save you time, energy, and money: You won’t waste 10 minutes looking for that trowel. You won’t be frustrated moving the wheelbarrow and that extra bag of potting soil out of the way so you can get to your lawn mower. And you won’t spend extra money to buy a set of gloves because you can’t find yours.
Read our tips for making your garden shed shine. Make your garden hose easy to find and get it out from underfoot by wrapping it on a large hook. Select large hooks with a steep angle to help hold the hose in place. Attaching a sturdy tool hanger to the inside of your shed’s door frees up the walls for shelves and a potting bench. Adjustable shelves give flexibility to match shelf height to tools. Take the organization one step farther by using plastic or metal bins to stash your stuff.

Prev NEXT Water dripping off the flexible hose beneath the sink indicates a leak at the hose-to-spout connection, the hose-to-spray-head connection, or somewhere in the hose itself. To repair the hose: If leak continues, disconnect hose, apply plumbers’ joint compound or wrap plumbers’ joint tape around threads, and reconnect hose.
Hose installation for a pull-down sprayer is the next step. Install the sprayer head onto the threaded end of the hose and hand tighten only. Attach the hose guide onto the other end of the hose and feed it through to the underside of the sink.
How to Connect Plumbing for Kitchen Sinks Hooking up the hot and cold water is often the final step when installing a kitchen faucet. Typical plumbing for a kitchen sink includes a drain line and a pair of water lines with shutoff valves under the sink. In most cases, the hot water is on the left and the cold water is on the right. Regardless of the style of faucet, hooking up the hot and cold water lines is relatively easy.
Supply lines with integral washers are available at most home centers. Obtain the lines based on the distance from the valves to the underside of the faucet. Look to the rear of the sink and locate the threaded stems on the underside of the faucets where the supply lines attach. Reach up behind the sink and screw the fitting onto the end of the threaded stem on the right side. Tighten the fitting with an adjustable wrench. If space is limited, tighten the fitting with a basin wrench.
Adjust the head of the wrench perpendicular to the stem, fit the head onto the fitting and rotate the handle of the wrench clockwise. Repeat this step and connect the remaining supply line onto the threaded tube at left.

Permalink Dave, We are like Bill Joyce in that we also keep ours open most of the time, especially since we are “static” ourselves. While our black tank needs emptying more than some of the others speak of, I keep a flashlight handy for checking it. Jo generally washes at least the clothes we wore “that day” in the evening so that things don’t pile up and require a lot of washing on the weekend. The last clothes, the bedding and towels usually get washed on the weekend. Now, having said all of that, there are those that say it does things good to NOT keep the grey tank open, because with water in the tank, should any food wash into the tank, it has a better chance of being liquified for easier discharge.
It may also be helpful to have water in the tank to help the tank level indicators. There was also someone that mentioned that water in the gray helped to dissipate any other oils or whatever that washes off of ourselves or other sources. Speaking of the level indicators, ours got to where they showed 3 lights out of 4 all the time. Then one day, after flushing, it went down to 1. Those things can drive a guy nuts.
That is why I check the shower for standing water and listen for bubbling in the plumbing.

Why would a kitchen faucet turn itself on when using the washer or outside faucets? A sudden surge of pressure from somewhere else in the pipeline releases the pressure on the tap allowing the tap to move freely. While there is still a little pressure remaining o…n the tap it will of course take the path of least resistance and open up a little.
This seems to happen more frequently as the tap threads continue to wear. My guess is that you have a Moen faucet they are known to do this when subjected to high line pressures and the pressure fluctuates.

For us, we needed: For us this was: First, we are going to make the drainage system where you stand when taking the shower. To do this, measure out 15″ on each of your two pieces of 2x4s and mark with a pencil. Saw in them both in half where you made the mark you can skip this step by having the hardware store cut them for you. Nail together two pieces of wood so that they form a 90″ angle. Repeat on all sides so that you have the frame of a square.
Place the frame under the tree where you’re setting up the shower and fill with smooth stones. It’s time to connect your hose to the sink with the adapters you picked out at the hardware store. Also at this time, connect the shower head to the other end of the hose. Now that the hose is connected to the sink, guide the hose outside a window to the desired tree. Twist the rope up the tree until you get to desired branch. Depending on how much slack you have, you will have to wrap the hose a few times around the trunk to make sure it’s taught.
